I am listening to a repeat of his appearance on The Dennis Prager Show and I agree with you completely. He claims his latest book, The Political Mind, combines objective science with his left-wing political views but gives readers no good way to discern between the two; at the same time, he snaps at anyone who is not able to independently discern between the two. He claims that terms like "conservative" and "liberal/progressive" have outlived their usefulness yet uses them continuously.

Regarding same-sex marriage, he claims "same-sex marriage" is a biased term, while "freedom to marry" is unbiased, even though "freedom to marry" could easily be applied to polygamous marriage rather than SSM. He claims liberals want less intrusive government but supports higher taxation and opposes private primary & secondary schools receiving the same taxpayer subsidation private universities receive.
He has some interesting points but should be more upfront about his lack of objectivity.

Serious Question Alert!!! is there someone out there who can explain what it is that makes this clearly smart and articulate guy comes off as such a tedious, almost irritating speaker? (assuming you agree that he is a tedious/annoying speaker. I can't even get to arguing the political/science merits of his argument because it's so hard for to listen to him. but why? i can't really put my finger on it. maybe in person it would be better.)...

It's because your deeply held values are so drastically different from his that your brain can only follow his argument with great difficulty. I think he's clear and engaging - but my values are like his.

Having someone express ideas that go against the grain of your assumptions is violent ignorance- to a conservative to yourself.
Some of us who still value freedom of thought welcome opposing viewpoints, because we actually welcome a free exchange of ideas.
Narrow mindedness is un-American. At least to me. It goes against our values as Americans.

IMHO it is because he is sarcastic and condescending, his target of ridicule is not to be found in his adoring audience and his argument lacks dimension from virtue of debate ie another point of view.
The fact he is doing a solo in itself tends to aggrandize the position, giving the listener the impression that his opinion must be worthy and profound... when in fact, it is not. He is singing to his choir.

I applaud your patience in being able to listen to him again, even when served with the milk and honey of D. Prager :-)
I can't quite put my finger on Prager- somehow seeming so wise and gentle yet so NWO at the same time (but without the obnoxiousnous normally assoc therewith).

The U.S. Political system entertains one party which is treated like a pre-game Coin. One side has a Donkey and the other has an Elephant. In the rarest of cases, the coin may land on the edge of another party though, regardless of the coin toss, the coin is still a product of the world bank.

Really important mention of the discussion/debate that used to be carried on in this country but no longer is about whether God is a loving, nurturing and forgiving God or whether he is a punishing God. One's view of God then is reflected in the family (strict father vs. nurturing parents) and then in political thought, liberal/progressive vs. conservative. One's view of God also seems to be reflected in ones personality so that those who see God as a punisher have permission to punish. Cute.

I think that Mr. Lakoff's comments have some merit. Conservatives do have several themes that they use to sway public opinion. For example the GOP strategy was
Obama is a Muslim
Obama is a Socialist
Obama is Unpatriotic
Obama is UN-American
Obama is an Elitist
Obama is Different from us
Regardless of whether you are liberal, conservative, or neither; I think we do well to understand some of the strategies that are used by politicians to influence our opinions.
